Maleah Taylor received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UAH in 2022, concentrating specifically in graphic design. Maleah interned in 2020 at The Studio Museum in Harlem, the world鈥檚 leading institution devoted to visual art by artists of African descent. In her own words, she shared how living and working in New York City shaped her creative perspective, taught her the power of adaptability, and deepened her commitment to representation in the arts. She also reflected on her experience and how it helped her to contribute meaningfully in a professional arts environment.

Where was your internship?

My first internship was as a Design & Digital Media Intern at The Studio Museum in Harlem, located in Harlem, NYC.

How long did you work there for?

I worked there for the Spring 2020 semester. Since it was March when the pandemic reached New York and many things shut down, I had to return home to Huntsville and finish the internship remotely. This was before The Studio Museum moved to their new building, so I was working with the team while they were still in their temporary programming space.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

Living in NYC was an unforgettable part of the experience. It was my first time visiting the city, and I got to stay for a few months! I was immersed in an environment filled with art, history, and culture, especially meaningful as a young creative working at a museum known to be the world鈥檚 leading institution devoted to visual art by artists of African descent, and is dedicated to Black art and artists. I loved the team I worked with; they were incredibly kind, talented, and generous with their insight. I even got to do freelance work with one of my supervisors after the internship ended. (She later launched her own company, and that opportunity helped me grow professionally and ultimately led to my current path as an independent Multimedia Designer.) I also met people from all over the world through museum programming and just by exploring the city, which broadened my sense of community and creative purpose.

Was there anything you wish had gone differently?

I wish I had gotten more time living in NYC and being on-site for the internship. The sudden shift to remote work due to the pandemic made it feel like something was taken from the experience, just as I was finding my rhythm. That said, I learned to adapt quickly and still found meaningful ways to contribute remotely.

Is there anything significant that happened during the internship that you would like to share?

One significant moment was meeting Thelma Golden, the Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem. Even though we met with her virtually, it was still a powerful and affirming experience. Thelma Golden is a visionary in the art world; internationally recognized for her curatorial work and advocacy for contemporary artists of African descent. Hearing directly from her about the Museum鈥檚 mission and legacy helped ground the work we were doing in something much larger than ourselves. It reminded me of the importance of representation, both in the arts and in leadership.

Finally, what would you wish you had known ahead of time when entering the internship?

I wish I had known just how important relationships are in any professional setting. Things like following up, celebrating wins with others, and being teachable go a long way. I also didn鈥檛 realize how valuable soft skills would be. Asking thoughtful questions, setting boundaries, and communicating clearly all helped me build trust and credibility. While technical and creative skills matter, being curious, responsive, and reliable made the biggest difference. I also wish I had been more mentally prepared for sudden change, especially when the pandemic disrupted everything mid-semester. Still, I learned that being adaptable and staying engaged, even through uncertainty, can really set you apart.

We want to hear from you!

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UAH prepares students to thrive in creative and professional environments, equipping them with the skills and perspectives they need to succeed. In her own words, Vivian shares her internship experience and how her College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences education prepared her to contribute meaningfully and grow professionally during her time there.

About the Internship:

During my internship with Cullman Electric Cooperative and Sprout Fiber Internet, I had the opportunity to gain valuable experience in numerous areas of communication and media. I worked 2nd Friday鈥檚 (promotional events), helping to plan, set up, and engage with the community to boost visibility and awareness. I also created graphics, edited videos, and helped produce both trivia-style and promotional videos that will be used across different digital platforms. Adding on, I contributed by updating member information, which required attention to detail and accuracy, and I applied my social media knowledge to create engaging content and increase audience interaction. Each task that CEC and Sprout Fiber Internet gave me allowed me to strengthen my communication skills while also developing a better understanding of branding and public engagement.

This internship pushed me to apply creative thinking and my knowledge in new ways. I had the chance to work on real projects that directly impacted the organization鈥檚 outreach and public image. Being trusted with projects such as video editing and content creation showed me how important clear, consistent communication is in building relationships with a community. Overall, my experience has been incredibly rewarding and helped prepare me for future roles in media, public relations, and communication-focused fields.

How my CAHS education helped:

My education through the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHS) prepared me for the responsibilities I had during my internship. I never would have discovered this opportunity without the help of Ms. McDavid, who searches for internships not just in Huntsville, but in my hometown as well. The internship emails she sent out are not all local to UAH which made a huge difference and allowed me to gain professional experience with no commute, staying close to home. I relied heavily on the information and skills I gained from some of my CAHS courses, including Crisis Communication, Introduction to Public Relations, Public Speaking, and several others that taught me real-world application and critical thinking.

The assignments and projects I completed in my CAHS courses helped me build a foundation in both written and visual communication. I felt confident voicing my opinion in creative discussions, presenting ideas, and understanding the importance of analyzing your audience, all of which were skills I practiced regularly during my internship. Whether I was editing a promotional video or creating graphics for an event, I clearly saw how my coursework prepared me to handle those tasks. My education not only gave me knowledge, but it also helped me grow professionally and gave me the courage to take initiative and contribute meaningfully to CEC and Sprout Fiber Internet.

About Cullman Electric Cooperative:

Cullman Electric Cooperative is a member-owned organization providing reliable energy and fiber internet services while actively engaging with the communities it serves. Through initiatives such as local events and digital outreach, the cooperative works to strengthen community connections and increase public awareness of its services. By combining dependable utility services with a commitment to community involvement, Cullman Electric Cooperative plays a vital role in supporting the areas it serves across North Alabama.

About the Communication Arts Major:

UAH's Communication Arts program offers students a comprehensive understanding of human communication, providing practical, critical, historical, and theoretical perspectives. This prepares them for careers, social life, and further academic studies. Gaining an understanding of the influence of media on communication, the various functions served by communication, and how people are persuaded are just a few of the many theoretical principles Communication Arts students learn. The program is designed for students who can write, speak, think critically, analyze, and imagine, and each class within the program enhances all of these skills.

July 2025, Nicole McDavid, CAHS Career & Internship Coordinator

UAH Communication Arts major Vivian Brock recently interned at Cullman Electric Cooperative, an organization dedicated to serving and connecting communities through reliable energy and fiber internet services.
