Written by: UAH March 23, 2021 Twenty-five projects, and the students who conducted the work, were recognized for excellence in research at the Research Horizons Virtual Poster Session held this month. Due to safety measures against the spread of COVID-19, the traditional face-to-face poster session was held virtually this year on Canvas. Judges were able to interact with undergraduate and graduate presenters via message boards and carried on with the competition by judging the posters in the virtual format. "Giving student researchers a chance to share their research and creative projects is an important part of inquiry-based learning, and it鈥檚 the reason that Research Horizons was launched seven years ago,鈥 says David Cook, director of Undergraduate Research at UAH. 鈥淭his year, unfortunately, we weren鈥檛 unable to give students the opportunity to present in person, so we experimented with Canvas as a platform for presenters, judges and the UAH community to interact safely,鈥 Cook says. 鈥淚 really appreciate everyone鈥檚 flexibility in giving the virtual poster session a chance and making it a great success.鈥 This year鈥檚 winners: College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Undergraduate First Place Russell Pope (History) 鈥淒edicatory Propaganda: 1 Kings 8 from Solomon to Hezekiah鈥 Mentor: Dr. Molly Johnson (History) Second Place Brenda Hernandez (Sociology) 鈥淚nadequate Social Spending in the U.S.: An Attitudinal Study of the Hispanic Perspective鈥 Mentor: Dr. Kyle Knight (Sociology) Third Place Rosemary Cortelli (Psychology) 鈥淧sychological Attributes in Future Spaceport Concepts鈥 Mentor: Dr. Kristin Weger (Psychology) Graduate First Place Sheri Leder (Industrial Organizational Psychology) 鈥淭he Benefits of Team Reflexivity in Diverse Remote Teams鈥 Mentor: Dr. Kristin Weger (Psychology) College of Business Undergraduate First Place (tie) Tiffany Guess (Information Systems) 鈥淏uilding an App: Nutrition To Go鈥 Mentor: Dr. Atiya Avery (Information Systems) First Place (tie) Nicholas Knighten (Economics & Computational Analysis / Finance) 鈥淗ealthy Diet Affordability in North Alabama During COVID-19鈥 Mentor: Dr. Brinda Mahalingam (Economics) Second Place Sebastian Rohrbach (Finance and Economics) 鈥淪urvey Formats: A study of item by item vs. matrix formats鈥 Mentor: Dr. Brinda Mahalingam (Economics) Third Place Tran Luu (Economics) 鈥淐orruption and Economic Development: The Case of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and The Philippines鈥 Mentor: Dr. Brinda Mahalingam (Economics) College of Education Undergraduate First Place Kathryn Rodebaugh (Kinesiology);
