The CC and OER communities are bursting with free and open course content! These links help you learn how to most effectively search for works licensed in the Creative Commons. There are other types of licenses that qualify as OER as well, such as subject matter in the public domain.

  • : MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) offers a free, open, online community of resources designed for faculty, staff, and students of higher education from around the world to share their learning materials and pedagogy. MERLOT is one of few learning object repositories (LORs) that feature curated, peer-reviewed content. This LOR contains learning objects in a variety of formats, including video.
  • : TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). The site is searchable by keyword and easily browsed by topic.
  • : Khan Academy has a library of over 3000 videos covering several academic topics including math, economics, science, engineering, arts, humanities and career/professional training.

  • : Cornell has digitized the world's largest natural sound archive, which includes analog recordings dating back to 1929.
  • : Growing archive of digital 78 rpm vintage music records. Most are free/open license, but check each entry for licensing information in this repository.
  • : This site is a resource for independent and nonprofit filmmakers, film students, and anyone in need of free music for their independent, nonprofit film, video, or short. The site hosts over 150 Moby tracks available for use at no cost.
  • : Historical recordings from the Library of Congress.

Photos & Graphics

  • : Pixabay images and line art are free to use, require no attribution, and can be modified. Pixabay has very high quality images and is searchable by keyword.
