Inclusive teaching describes the range of approaches to teaching that consider the diverse needs and backgrounds of all students to create an equitable learning environment free of overt and covert discrimination. Attention to inclusivity means considering the racial composition, ethnic background, religious beliefs, gender identities, sexuality, and mental and physical abilities of our students in class content, design, and execution because a student鈥檚 identity frames how the student learns and experiences the world. Inclusive teaching happens at all levels of course design and implementation, from the creation of the syllabus, assignments, and activities, to selection of course content, to the implementation of course policies, to in-person and online interaction between faculty and students, and between students of different backgrounds.
The average learner does not exist: no two brains are alike and all learners bring their own lived social and cultural experiences to the learning community.
Why is inclusivity important?
It鈥檚 good for students, it's good for faculty, and it鈥檚 good for the university:
- Students - It is our job to prepare students for their professional and personal lives beyond the university. Employers increasingly list the ability to work with diverse groups of people as a desired skill when hiring. Inclusive teaching prepares students for their future in a diverse workplace. This approach to teaching helps students develop the interpersonal skills to work collaboratively and creatively in the contemporary work environment. Faculty should intentionally create this environment to benefit students.
- Faculty - We have an obligation to engage in professional development and lifelong learning. Learning about and implementing inclusive teaching practices help faculty fulfill professional obligations and become better teachers and mentors to students of different backgrounds.
- University - Inclusive teaching helps recruit and retain students from a larger pool of prospects, which is good for university recruitment, graduation rates, job placement, and overall standing.
